A Note To My Friends Reading This...
Dec. 20th, 2004 10:42 amWhile I do appreciate the idea that my friends want to express their affection for me through gifts at this time of year, I'd kindly ask everyone to please forego getting me any gifts this Christmas. My financial circumstances aren't going to allow me to get anyone any gifts this year, and when I receive a gift without one in return, I feel god-awful.
I know it's not in the spirit of the season to feel bad about getting gifts, but that's simply the way I'm built. Without gifts in hand to give, receiving them makes me feel a shameful obligation to the person giving them. In the end, it makes me feel as though I owe them something, like a debt has been incurred. Personally, I despise that more than anything.
I know this seems a bit grinch-y, but I'd rather have a happy giftless holidays than a guilty Christmas.
