I'm considering buying a domain name for my own personal use, but I know nothing of proper hosting or what the best way of going about it would be. Does anyone have any suggestions about where to get it hosted, etc?

I use godaddy.com to register my info and hosting matters for hosting. I pay $11/mo for the hosting (I can't recall how much the name itself costs.. I think around $20/year? ish?)

I've never had any problems with either companies, I particularly recommend hosting matters. I've got two message boards set up, a gallery and regular webpages and I don't come near a fraction of what I'm able to do.

Thank you; I'm a babe in the forest in such matters.

I use webhero.com on the recommendation of [livejournal.com profile] urso. I've had them for over two years now and I have never been happier. I was wet behind the ears with webserver stuff, and they were super helpful. They have great phone support too.

I can even get a referral if you decide you want to go with them! WOO! LEt me know, so I can send it to you...if you wish.

Do you know what requirements you're gonna need for the site? Any particular dbase or scripting?

I use http://www.phpwebhosting.com/ -- they have only one simple plan for 9.95/mo that has mySQL, php scripting, some other goodies. And they don't have fixed limits for bandwidth or HD space.

My God, no. I don't even know HOW to make a webpage. I just want to buy a domain & get a place to muck about with one.

It will have pictures, but nothing complex. Just info pages, a personal site.

I also use GoDaddy which provides solid service, but a daunting interface for casual users.

Another GoDaddy fan here. And not just because of the name of the firm, neither.

I've had excellent luck with Mad Dog Domains and Cattle Co. for the last few years.
I think it's like $4 a month or something.
