Currently I'm concocting a few new games to run as I've decided NOT to quit gaming but to rather embrace it. In the course of putting together a Trek game I've been picking over for a year, I've been stumped on what to call an Oberth-class surveyor slated for my Star Trek: The Dark Heart of Space (working title) game. I was thinking a few of my LJ nerd-brothers out there could point me in the right direction.

All of the names below are either astronomers, rocket scientists, astrophysicists or plasma researchers with the exception of the U.S.S. Ellison, all praise be to the Harlan, the U.S.S. Sojourner, added because I like the name and the U.S.S. Vostok, the first manned mission in space. Oberth-class ships are generally named after scientists, preferably astronomers, rocket scientists and astrophysicists. Tell me what you think sounds best:

I'm working on a number of games & one way or another I'll start running something at the end of this month. Depending on my group available and tastes it could be anything. I'm looking at Midnight, Ravenloft, Star wars, Star trek, Changeling: The Lost, or Scion.

If you get that Star Trek game up and running, and I can put it in my schedule, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd probably want to play. But you'd have to tolerate a complete novice in your midst.

Novices aren't a problem at all, Joe. I give my former players first option, but I don't think I'll have more of them sign up than I need.

There's no guarantee I'm going to run this soon; I'm just finishing it so I can trot it out at any time. I will put your interest down tho, guy. :-)

I personally like the way "Sir the U.S.S. Rutherford has just been destroyed by *insert something big and mean*"

Well, ideally, since it is the player's ship they WON'T be experiencing that.

Ideally for whom? Is there no "strand crew on planet because ship about to go boom" scenario?

Essentially, being trapped on one planet might mean death for the entire crew, so it is to be avoided.

Goddard isn't named after the writer is it?

one learns something new everyday... and that would make sense for a space ship to be named after him

Alas, according to Star Trek Ships: Expanded, the USS Goddard (NCC-59621) was a Korolev-class vessel seen in TNG's episode "The Vengeance Factor". It was also the name of the shuttle Captain Picard "loaned" to Captain Scott in TNG's Relics.

In the TNG era, scientist names were often used for the shuttlecraft names (Cousteau, Curie, El-Baz, Feynman, Goddard, Hawking, & Onizuka, according to this). A list is available at Memory Alpha.

That seems pretty inconsistent when you look at how all the shuttles are named.

Given that half of the Oberth-class are named after rocket scientists, famous scientists, or early spaceflight pioneers I decided to keep that naming convention. Just as most runabouts are named after rivers, I thought it made sense to try & stick to a naming convention, at least somewhat.

Beware the Wiki. It's edits go snicker-snakt and it will let itself be edited by angry 14 year olds...

Plus, fuck it, keeping a naming convention for a class of ships makes more sense.

What system does the Star Trek game run off of... or does it have its own system? I am having trouble finding info on it on the interwebs... or I am not googling what I want correctly.

You know I am up for any game ya wanna run.

It has it's own system, kind of like D20 but using D6's. It's fairly easy to learn. I'll show it to you when you get here.

I like it, but not for this. I put it in future ship names!

So you might be playing Star Trek with the USS Yukawa, eh?
Good luck with whatever gayme you end up mastering, I'm all sorts of envious. What's "Scion" about? Don't know that one. I was wanting to start STAR WARS RPGing a few gaymes before we moved, but no one responded so no luck there. Hopefully we'll find time and mates to play in our knew home in Montreal. Till then we'll just play STAR WARS minis and Knights of the Old Republic.

Geek Leather Daddy cuddles and hugs. Phasers to kill, cubby.

I am putting quite a few games together. Star Wars-wise I've got two ideas: one for a Clone Wars-era game and one is a campaign where the characters are the "fist" of the Emperor.

Scion is about playing the children of the gods... eventually progressing into demigods and then on to being gods.
