Here's a Fairy Tale for you about two cubbies...

Cubby E has lived in a magickal land of no rent & free food for nearly eight months! Cubby E does little around the castle and only works part time at Ye Olde Ink & Toner Shoppe. Cubby E has saved no shillings and spent his money on comic books. Cubby E was laid off by Ye Olde Ink & Toner Shoppe & decided he should buy comic books to celebrate! Yay! Cubby E is mad because he says he can't get a job in the kingdom unless he has a Never, Neverland Address. Cubby E decided it was a good idea to *not* tell the King that he was laid off by Ye Olde Ink & Toner Shoppe...

Meanwhile, Cubby J moved into the magickal kingdom a week ago & already has two jobs and an apartment! Cubby J didn't use a Never, Neverland Address or his college degree, but still got Ye Olde Employment. Cubby J helps around the house, pays for his food, and replaces anything he uses! Cubby J will be out of the castle a few weeks earlier than he said he would be! Cubby J really makes Cubby E sad because Cubby E TRIES SO HARD! IT'S NOT HIS FAULT!

Cubby E is just looking for his place in this world, his pLaAaaACCEEE in this wOoOOOoOoOrld!

Who do you think the dragon is going to eat? Will a hero save Cubby E from the dragon?

Why hasn't the "king" kick "Cubby E" out of the magickal land of no rent and free food?

Sounds as if you should change the 'E' to 'M' (mooch) or 'P' (parasite). Cut him loose.

Cubby E slips off the drawbridge and drowns in the moat while being devoured by the alligators within, while Prince Hungalot sweeps Cubby J off his feet and they Fuck Happily Ever After.

Alternate: When he discovers Cubby E's irresponsibility, and/or he gets tired of the sounds of the Michael W. Smith-alike, the King himself has Cubby E cast into the alligator-filled moat, while Prince Hungalot sweeps Cubby J, etc., etc., etc.

Yes, drawbridge up after 4/30. The catapults, ballistas and trebuchets will be put on the ramparts to deter future cubbies.

Wow, Cubby E sounds like my last four furry roommates.

Drop him off at one of the Chicago area furry enclaves. Since there's a huge furcon in the area, there are always clandestine crash pads of young furries trying to live near the "scene." Give him a good sob story about being persecuted. He'll fit right in. :)

It's not technically a fairytale if it doesn't begin with "Once upon a time" and end with "Happily ever after."

Oh, and it must have some involvement with a magical midget. Dwarves, gnomes, halflings - it doesn't much matter. Just something magical and short.

Date: 2008-04-09 10:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hickbear.livejournal.com
It would appear that the "magical and short" part is satisfied by Cubby E's small amount of remaining time in the Kingdom...

If there's anything that growing up in the church taught me, it's that once you are finding yourself singing Michael W Smith songs, something has gone very very wrong.

Yes, I know you love to come to the rescue, and I'm not saying that like a bad thing, it is very admirable, but come on Matt.. you can't save everyone. :(

When Cubby E got kicked out of his last castle by the poorest of kings for 'never paying rent' that has to tell you something. A giant neon warning sign.

Its funny. My first reaction is to defend. And then I realize that I have no reason to defend nor any real rationale to defend. I was going to say "Age", but my own experience and cubby J's experience previous to this one contradicts that.

I'm more mystified by my own desire to say "but...." which then must be followed by "no. it isn't right to defend. accept. no. bullshit." And the defense is only bullshit. I know I said no to people in situations similar (and situations EXACTLY as you describe) because I didn't want to be in the position you are in. I felt shame to offer words and ideas and not space and time to those people. This ending does not make me feel better (as exemplified by my desire to defend), but I guess it does prove my misgivings before.

some folks are ready for the world, and some are not. I mentioned to J yesterday when we had dinner somewhere in our talk that he should take a moment to feel pride in that he's done x, y and z, not without obstacle or adaptation, but with resolve, ingenuity and maturity. I know I am incapable of patting myself on the back, but cubby J deserves credit for what he does and hopefully in a way that does not harm cubby E too much...but enough to make him see the world for what it is, not what he thought it would be.

Your way to kind Matt...

Oh dear. I've let someone have free rent and that was enough of a mistake. Adding free food to it, especially to someone of the bearish persuasion is just insane! I've heard all those excuses before.

Cubby E has to face facts. Unless he finds Daddy S (for sugar) next week to pay all his bills - and that's not likely - he's done for if he doesn't take job A... or rather, A job. Sadly, sometimes we have to learn important things about life the hard way.

If this is the situation you told me about in November I'm surprised that Cubby E hasn't been forcibly removed from the castle already. Cubby J sounds very responsible and I'm glad that he's moving in the right direction.

To be fair, I'd have to say that Cubby J only got one of the jobs without his college degree. Because one of them very much involves his certificates.

Most of the old tales had unhappy endings...it tends to drive the reality home like a rail road spike. Thats why I like them so much.

At this point I would have told Cubby E to go to the nearest thrift store with his "owed" $90 buy a couple of couch cushions and find a nice piece of sidewalk to call his own. At least he'd be comfortable not that I'd care. After all of this he needs to either learn to fend for himself by himself, or get his bib, diapers, and pacifiers (now and apparently forever known as comic books) and head back where he came from because he obviously hasn't grown up and isn't ready to be on his own.
