What if?

So: What if I just said "Fuck It" and abandoned my plans to limp along to an associates degree at College of DuPage and just enrolled in an evening Bachelor's degree program at Northwestern University or DePaul University? Why limp towards mediocrity when I can just start making my way towards a decent degree in Economics from a university I won't be ashamed to graduate from?

I've received nothing but bad advice from counselors thus far. Why not just disregard it and GO?

So, what if?

I don't like my chances at getting into Northwestern, but for the time & $50 to apply I may as well try, right? If I apply for fall now, I might be able to square everything away quickly.

Why not?

Too late to apply for fall 2009, no?
I'd go for a full BA, were I you. Especially if an MBA is in your future.

Wouldn't the most cost-sensitive plan be to enroll in an evening or part time program at a community college with plans to transfer to Northwestern or DePaul? You could save money and have better chances of getting with a good academic record.

You never know unless you try. I would make an attempt and see where it gets you... and a Bachelor's degree can't hurt.

There's certainly no reason not to apply. That was my attitude towards grad school. I decided to apply first, and then make my decision when I knew what my options were.

I'm in a very similar situation. I plan on getting my Assoc. then going to finish up my Bachelor's at a larger school.

For me it's financial and also the scope of the AA is more pin-pointed to a certain aspect of what I'm going for.

I made sure the colleges I plan on doing this with had easy and good records for credit transfers to make sure my time spent at the technical school wasn't wasted but yeah, the technical college is about 70% cheaper (currently I'm taking 15 credit hours for about $600) than the four-year university and if I can get about 60% of the credit toward my bachelor's from it - that's what I'm doing!

Plus, the way the lottery scholarships work in Georgia (so, ymmv) I'll have established semesters/quarters of education so that I'm eligible for the GRANT and not just the loan thus making my time at the 4 year college less expensive as well. (although I'm still researching how that will all work out)

If you have to ask yourself "why not?" one more time, the opportunity's going to slip away. Go. Now.

You may as well try. The worst they can say is no and so you'd just have to finish that Associate's degree first.

Go big or go home.

If you've made progress on your AA, and you do transfer to a big school, you may lose some (maybe a bunch) of credits from one school to the next and have to re-tread the same steps you've already taken. So you may want to ask these questions of the admissions folks. But once you have the AA, they can't take that from you.... just something to consider.

Go for the BA, man. It is always scary in the beginning, but if you are considering it, then you are willing to do the effort.

I just would suggest you to start thinking about one thing, what do you want to do with a BA in economics? I can give you some honest answers about a degree and a career in economics if you want.

Hey Matt,

Finance wise, I hear a lot of people using COD for 2 years (very reasonably priced) and then transfer to the higher priced full college for a bachelor's degree.

I do find in-person attendance to have a good effect on my ability to understand and retain info.

Hugs, Chuck

Isn't it too late by now to apply for fall enrollment? Usually they cut off back in winter?
